Deem certified to run for Senate, setting up possible challenge

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Former state Sen. Frank Deem, R-Wood, has been notified by the secretary of state's office that he will be certified as a Senate candidate on the 2012 primary ballot, setting up a possible constitutional showdown.

Deem said Monday he hopes his candidacy will lead to resolution of a provision in the state Constitution that he believes violates the "one man-one vote" mandate in the U.S. Constitution.

    @dumb hillbilly:
    This has nothing to do with the recent redistricting. The clause about there being no more than 1 senator from a county in a district is in the state constitution and has always impacted the candidates. It's just that nobody has really challenged it before.

    I wish I lived in that district so I could vote against Boley. She and her kind need to go! They're not doing this state any good.

    I think I have to agree with Senator Boley. Deem lost to the other Senator (Nohe) in 2010, but rather than wait two years to challenge him for a re-match, he sets up a constitutional challenge where his money and influence can help buy a Senate seat. At a minimum, it throws that Senate district into turmoil, where the focus is on Deem getting personal political power, rather than serving the public. The state Constitution balances the "one man, one vote" principle with the reality that voters wanting to vote for candidates from small counties will be disenfranchised in races against candidates from larger counties. But instead of giving everyone a chance, Deem insists on getting his way right now. That really does seem like a country-club elitist type of thing to do.

    Ms. Tennant wastes no time telling everyone in the room that she's the "Chief Elections Officer" for the state, but continues to emulate a spineless jellyfish when it comes to making a decision. The official line from her office is to tell the disenfranchised to retain their own attorney for guidance. The political line is, "Hey, look at me. I can do it all!"

    @dumb hillbilly
    This had nothing to do with redistricting. In fact the 3rd Senatorial District underwent only a minor change in Roane County.
