Jim Barach's Outlook from the Storm Team Weather Center

Warm Temperatures & Rain Could Bring Flooding...

Flood Watch for Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas, Randolph and Greenbrier counties in West Virginia through Saturday...

A persistent low pressure system forming to the west will affect our weather over the next several days. The net result will be partly to mostly cloudy skies, periods of rain showers which could be heavy in areas and temperatures that will still be well above normal. The one problem will be if significant rain falls over the mountain counties where there is still a deep snow pack, we could see some serious flooding. The best chance for that will be Friday into Saturday which is why the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas, Randolph and Greenbrier counties through Saturday.
Tonight, skies will be mostly cloudy and it should stay dry. The clouds and warm air mass will keep the overnight low to a pleasant 49 degrees along with light winds. Thursday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers, particularly at night when a spoke of low pressure will move through the region which will bring mostly light showers that will amount to a tenth to a quarter inch of rainfall. The high temperature will be 68 degrees. Friday will see a trailing cold front move through the region which will interact with the warm and moist air mass to set off more rain showers. Some of the showers could bring heavy rainfall, especially near any thunderstorms that form along or ahead of the cold front. The high temperature will again be warm, making it up to 71 degrees. Some of the storms could be on the strong side, but the biggest threat will be the possibility of flooding they might cause. Mountain areas that are under the Flood Watch still have a thick snow pack over the area. The warm temperatures along with heavy rain could melt off tremendous amounts of water that will pour into local rivers. That could cause flooding along the rivers which could in turn run off into other rivers which could lead to regional flooding. The Eyewitness Storm Team will be watching this situation very closely and will let you know about any
impending flooding well in advance. Make sure to stay tuned to Eyewitness News and this web site for all your local weather information!
Saturday will be mostly cloudy with more rain showers. There could still be some heavy rain showers in areas which could keep the flooding potential high. The high temperature will be cooler at 61 degrees as cooler air will move in behind the passing cold front. Sunday will be cooler as more cool air spreads into the region as the storm system continues to move off to the east. The high temperature will drop to 49 degrees. Skies will be cloudy with light rain showers continuing to fall, with some of the higher elevations
possibly seeing the rain showers change over to snow flakes.
Monday will also be cloudy and cool, with the temperature dropping even further to 46 degrees. There will be some scattered rain showers which again could change over to snow flakes at the higher elevations. Tuesday will see high pressure move in behind the departing storm system which will bring back mostly sunny skies. The air mass will still be a bit on the cool side so the high temperature will only make it to 53 degrees despite abundant sunshine. Wednesday will also be mostly sunny with the high temperature reaching a comfortable 60 degrees.
Thursday will see the sunshine continue as high pressure will still be the dominant weather feature across the region. The high temperature will make it all the way up to 68 degrees. Friday will see a few clouds move back into the picture but it will still be mild and dry. The high temperature will warm up to 70 degrees. The following weekend looks to keep the warm and dry trend going. Skies will be partly cloudy as high pressure remains in control along with a high temperature of 73 degrees.

A quick look back at yesterday's forecast shows that skies were mostly cloudy along with scattered rain showers that were forecast. The overnight low was 44 degrees with the high temperature coming in at 67 degrees. Huntington also came in with a high temperature of 67 degrees. Charleston reported .05" rainfall with Huntington coming in with .18" rainfall.

Tonight: Skies will be mostly cloudy but it should stay dry through the night. The clouds will trap in some warmth from the day so the overnight low temperature will be a mild 49 degrees.

Thursday: Skies will be mostly cloudy through the day which will make for a pleasant afternoon high temperature of 68 degrees. A wave of low pressure will move through the region late in the day which could set off some light rain showers.

Friday: Skies will again be mostly cloudy but there will be afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms which could be heavy in areas. Heavy rainfall over the mountains could cause flooding as they could melt quite a bit of the heavy snow pack. The high temperature will reach 71 degrees.

Saturday: As the cold front slides to the east, cooler air will move in which will drop the high temperature to 61 degrees. Skies will be mostly cloudy with more rain showers that could add to any flooding issues that develop.

Sunday: Skies will be cloudy with more rain showers on the way. Rainfall totals will be light, and cooler air moving in behind the departing storm system will drop the high temperature to 49 degrees.

Monday: Cool air will still be the story as we start the next work week. A low pressure system will keep skies cloudy with light scattered rain showers along with a high temperature of 46 degrees.

Tuesday: High pressure will return to the region which will make for mostly sunny skies along with warmer conditions. The high temperature will rise to 53 degrees.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny skies will continue under the domination of high pressure. The mercury will continue its climb, making it up to 60 degrees.

Thursday: The warm and dry weather shows no signs of letting up as we approach the next weekend. Skies will again be mostly sunny with a high temperature of 68 degrees.

Friday: High pressure will continue to bring mild conditions across the region. Skies will be mostly sunny with the high temperature making it up to 70 degrees.

Saturday: The weekend will start off with partly cloudy skies and another mild afternoon. The high temperature will reach up to 73 degrees.

One Final Note: The temperature has done quite a turnaround in the past few days. The high on Saturday was 48 degrees, Sunday 54 degrees, Monday 60 degrees and Tuesday 70 degrees!
