Douglass Harlow's Outlook from the Storm Team Weather Center
Finally...A Drop in Humidity!
An afternoon of downpours Thursday gave way to a dry night and now a comfortable morning. We picked up a respectable inch of rain in Charleston thanks to that muggy airmass but now all of that has been swept to the south with the passage of a cold front. That front is now well to our south and we've undergone a dramatic change. Dewpoints Thursday hovered in the mid-70s...which is nasty. Now our dewpoints have tumbled into the 50s this morning and that's where they'll stay today. We're in for a nice one with dry weather expected and low humidity. Temperatures will top out around 82 degrees. The only fly in the ointment is a deck of clouds rolling in from the northwest. This is working into our northern viewing area this morning and at least from I-64 north we may trend mostly cloudy for a few hours today. Other than that we're in great shape!
Tonight some clouds will continue to stream in as a warm front approaches. Temperatures will fall to around 64 degrees. Humidity will remain low Saturday as our dewpoints stay in the 50s. We will see some clouds at times ahead of that warm front and I think some spotty showers may pop in the afternoon. However, with low humidity I don't expect any downpours or thunderstorms...just a light shower at worst. Most of us will be fine so it's certainly nothing to cancel your plans over. Highs will reach about 84 degrees.
That front pushes to our east Sunday so dewpoints will climb back into the 60s, making it feel a bit muggy again. I think we'll see more sun this day too so temperatures will heat up to around 89 degrees. August will certainly feel more like Summer again. Because of that a Summertime isolated thunderstorm chance is there but again I'm not expecting much...most of us will be dry for your outdoor plans. I will say that the Greenbrier Valley may be one of the more likely spots to pop a storm so if you're heading to watch the final round of the Classic you might want an umbrella.
The heat is back in a big way next week. A ridge of high pressure will center over the Southern Plains and build east by Tuesday and Wednesday. That will lead to a return to the hot and muggy weather here. We'll see a high of 92 Monday and 94 Tuesday. Wednesday should also be in the middle 90s with only a few isolated storms firing in the afternoon. It now looks like we'll have to wait until Thursday for any relief as a cold front drops in from the north with some more rain. That should drop highs back into the 80s again.
A cold front moving through the region brought cloudy skies along with showers and thunderstorms. The storms brought some brief heavy rainfall but were fairly fast movers so flooding was not a problem. The front will continue to the south which will mean skies will be clearing. The moisture left over from the rain will make for some lat night and early morning fog. The cool and dry air behind the front along with high pressure will make for a mostly sunny and very comfortable day on Friday. Humidity levels will be low and the high temperature will only reach 84 degrees so it will be a very nice day to brown bag it and eat outside for lunch. The high pressure cell will move to the east on Saturday which will allow a weak storm system to move in over the weekend. Saturday will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of an afternoon shower and a high of 86 degrees. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a better chance of a scattered shower or storm in the afternoon with a high temperature of 89 degrees. High pressure will move in again on Monday which will bring back partly cloudy skies and dry conditions along with a hot high temperature of 92 degrees. Tuesday will also be partly cloudy and hot
with a high temperature of 94 degrees. Wednesday will see a cold front move through which will mean more clouds, showers and storms and a high of 86 degrees. After that, high pressure will move over the region which will keep things warm and dry for the next few days. Thursday will be partly cloudy and 88 degrees, Friday partly cloudy and 90 degrees. The weekend will also be partly cloudy with Saturday looking at a high temperature of 91 degrees and Sunday coming in with a hot 92 degree high temperature.
Tonight, skies will clear out as the cold front moves to the south and high pressure moves in. The moisture from the day's rain showers will make for some late night and early morning fog, especially in river valleys. The overnight low temperature will drop to 62 degrees with the cool air behind the front and clearing skies. Friday will be very comfortable as high pressure moves in over the region. Skies will be mostly sunny with low humidity levels. The high temperature will only reach 84 degrees making it very easy to spend some time outside.
The weekend will bring a mixed bag of weather to the region. Saturday will be partly cloudy as high pressure moves to the east and a weak storm system moves in. There is a slight chance of some scattered afternoon showers or storms along with a high temperature of 86 degrees. Sunday will see a better chance of some afternoon showers or a thunderstorm. Some of the showers could briefly interrupt the Greenbrier Classic in Lewisburg but the worst we should see is a short delay. The high temperature will be a warm and muggy 89 degrees.
Monday will be partly cloudy and hot as high pressure takes over once again. The afternoon high temperature will make it up to 92 degrees. Tuesday will also be partly cloudy, hot and dry. The mercury will climb even higher, making it up to 94 degrees. Wednesday will see another cold front move through the region which will bring back mostly cloudy skies along with showers and thunderstorms. The high temperature will drop to 86 degrees because of the clouds and rainfall.
Thursday will see high pressure move in once again, and it should stick around the next few days. Thursday will be partly cloudy with a high temperature of 88 degrees. Friday will also be partly cloudy with the afternoon high temperature making it up to 90 degrees. The weekend looks to be partly cloudy, dry and hot. Saturday's high temperature will reach 91 degrees with Sunday coming in a degree warmer at 92 degrees.
A quick look back at yesterday's forecast shows that skies stayed partly to mostly cloudy through the night. The low temperature came in at a warm 75 degrees which was four degrees warmer than the forecast low temperature of 71 degrees. Showers and storms came in as forecast in the late morning through the afternoon with the high temperature making it to 84 degrees, two degrees cooler than the forecast high temperature of 86 degrees. Huntington's high temperature was 87 degrees. Charleston had an afternoon thunderstorm that dumped a quick 1.07" of rainfall. Huntington picked up just a trace of rainfall.
Tonight: Skies will gradually clear out, which will lead to some dense fog forming late at night. The overnight low temperature will drop to a cool 62 degrees with the clearing skies and cooler air behind the front.
Friday: High pressure moving in will bring mostly sunny skies and a very comfortable afternoon. With low humidity values it will be a nice day to enjoy the outdoors with a cooler high temperature of 84 degrees.
Saturday: As high pressure moves off to the east, a weak storm system will move into the region. Skies will be partly cloudy on Saturday with a slight chance of an afternoon shower or storm and a high temperature of 86 degrees.
Sunday: Skies will be mostly cloudy and there will be a better chance of a scattered afternoon shower or storm. The high temperature will be 89 degrees. Anyone going to the Greenbrier Classic in Lewisburg should make an umbrella part of their gear.
Monday: High pressure will move back into the region which will mean partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. It will be hot, with an afternoon high temperature of 92 degrees.
Tuesday: High pressure will make for another partly cloudy and hot day. No rain is expected, and the high temperature will make it up to 94 degrees.
Wednesday: A cold front will move through the region which will make for mostly cloudy skies along with showers and thunderstorms. The high temperature will drop to 86 degrees.
Thursday: High pressure will quickly move in behind the departing cold front which will make for partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm to 88 degrees.
Friday: High pressure will again make for a partly cloudy, dry and hot day. The high temperature will continue to climb, making it up to 90 degrees.
Saturday: The weekend will start off partly cloudy and hot. High pressure will make for another scorcher with the high temperature making it up to 91 degrees.
Sunday: The hot streak will continue as high pressure continues to stay in control. Under partly cloudy skies the high temperature will make it to 92 degrees.
One Final Note:Today's downpour brought nearly an inch more rainfall to Charleston. That puts the monthly total for precipitation at more than seven and a half inches. That means we are within striking distance of the wettest monthly total this year of 8.01" back in May.
