Jim Barach's Outlook from the Storm Team Weather Center

Awesome Weekend On The Way...

High pressure made for a mostly sunny day on Friday and the pattern will take us right through the weekend as well. Tonight, skies will be clear under high pressure. The overnight low temperature will be a seasonable 53 degrees. The weekend will start out with high pressure still in control across the region for mostly sunny skies and dry conditions on Saturday. The high temperature will be 85 degrees with low humidity which should make it a great day to be outdoors. It will also be a great morning to join in at the Great Strides Walk to fight Cystic Fibrosis at the Kanawha State Forest near the pool area. The walk starts at 9:00 and I would love to see everyone come out and join us. If you would like to make a donation, e-mail me at jbarach@sbgnet.com. Sunday will be partly cloudy and dry as a low pressure system off the coast sends in a few clouds. The high temperature will be 86 degrees.
Monday will see the low pressure center move a bit inland which will make for partly cloudy skies but we could also see an isolated shower or storm from the low and an approaching cold front. The high temperature will cool slightly to 84 degrees. Tuesday will see the cold front move in which will make for mostly cloudy skies along with showers and thunderstorms. The high temperature will cool to 78 with the additional cloud cover and showers.
The cold front will linger close enough on Wednesday to bring in a chance of a few scattered showers under partly cloudy skies. The high temperature will warm a bit to 80 degrees. High pressure will take over control on Thursday which will bring back mostly sunny skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm to 86 degrees. Friday will also be mostly sunny under high pressure and it will warm even more. The afternoon high temperature will make it all the way to 88 degrees.
The next weekend looks to be partly cloudy and dry as high pressure remains over the region. The additional cloud cover will drop the high temperature on Saturday just a touch to 86 degrees. Sunday will be partly cloudy and dry as well with high pressure still the area's dominant weather feature. The high temperature will be 87 degrees. Monday will also be partly cloudy and dry with high pressure still in place across the region. The high temperature will again come in at 87 degrees.

A quick look back at yesterday's forecast shows that skies stayed clear overnight as forecast. The overnight low temperature came in at 50 degrees, two degrees cooler than the forecast low temperature of 52 degrees. Skies were mostly sunny and dry on Friday, also as forecast. The high temperature in Charleston on Friday was 84 degrees, one degree warmer than the forecast high temperature of 83 degrees. Huntington's high temperature was 82 degrees. Neither city reported any rainfall.

Tonight: High pressure will make for clear skies through the night. The low temperature will be a seasonable 53 degrees.

Saturday: Skies will be mostly sunny under high pressure with dry conditions. The high temperature will be 85 degrees, and again I would like to invite you to join us at the Great Strides Walk to fight Cystic Fibrosis at the Kanawha State Forest. The start is at 9:00 AM right near the swimming pool. See you there!

Sunday: The second half of the weekend will be partly cloudy as a low pressure system off the coast spreads in a few clouds but it will stay dry. The high temperature will warm a bit to 86 degrees.

Monday: Skies will be partly cloudy but there could be some isolated afternoon showers and storms as the low pressure system and an approaching cold front come close to the region. The high temperature will drop just a bit to 84 degrees.

Tuesday: The cold front will move in on Tuesday for mostly cloudy skies along with showers and thunderstorms. The high temperature will fall to 78 degrees with the additional cloud cover and showers.

Wednesday: The cold front will linger just long enough to bring partly cloudy skies and another chance at some showers or a storm. The high temperature will warm to 80 degrees.

Thursday: High pressure will move back in across the region which will make for mostly sunny skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm to 86 degrees.

Friday: High pressure will again be in control for mostly sunny skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm to 88 degrees.

Saturday: The next weekend will start out with high pressure still in place across the region. Skies will be partly cloudy which will take a couple of degrees off the high temperature, dropping it to 86 degrees.

Sunday: High pressure will make for another day of partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm slightly to 87 degrees.

Monday: Skies will again be partly cloudy and dry under a dome of high pressure. The high temperature will come in at 87 degrees.

One Final Note: If you haven't noticed a lot of wind so far this month, you are right. The average wind speed so far in May is a scant 2.9 mph. That is well below the normal wind speed in Charleston during the year of 6.2 mph which is one of the lowest average winds speeds in the country. So it has been relatively calm for an area that is fairly calm to begin with!
