Jim Barach's Outlook from the Storm Team Weather Center
Wintry Weather Returns Wednesday...
A low pressure system will move into the region on Wednesday which will bring cloudy skies and a mixture of rain and snow. The showers should start in the morning hours and could affect the morning commute. There will be no snow accumulations except in the mountains where one to two inches could fall. The high temperature will cool to 36 degrees. The storm system will move out quickly which will leave Thursday with mostly sunny skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm a bit to 43 degrees. Friday will be partly cloudy ahead of an approaching storm system. The high temperature
will reach 49 degrees but will cool as a sharp cold front moves through. Snow showers will start Friday night and continue into Saturday. Friday's high temperature will reach 49 degrees.
Saturday will see snow showers continue through the day. Most areas will pick up one to two inches of snowfall before the system moves out Saturday night. The high temperature will drop to a chilly 30 degrees. Sunday will be partly cloudy and dry as high pressure moves in across the region. The cold air mass will keep the temperature down to 35 degrees despite abundant sunshine.
Monday will be mostly sunny as high pressure continues to be the area's dominant weather feature. The high temperature will make it up to 40 degrees. Tuesday will be partly cloudy ahead of another approaching storm system. The high temperature will warm to 45 degrees ahead of the approaching cold front.
Wednesday will see the cold front move in which will make for mostly cloudy skies and rain showers. The high temperature will warm to 48 degrees before the showers move in. Thursday will be cloudy with rain showers that could change over to snow as cold air moves in behind the front. The high temperature will cool to 42 degrees. Friday will be cloudy with snow showers as cold air lingers over the region along with upslope winds
that will generate snow as the air is forced up mountain slopes. The high temperature will drop to 36 degrees.
A quick look back at yesterday's forecast shows that skies were mostly clear overnight as forecast. The low temperature fell to 26 degrees which was four degrees cooler than the forecast low temperature of 30 degrees. Tuesday was mostly sunny as forecast. The high temperature in Charleston came in at 52 degrees, one degree above the forecast high temperature of 51 degrees. Huntington's high temperature was 51 degrees. Neither city reported any precipitation.
Tonight: Skies will become cloudy ahead of an approaching storm system. The overnight low temperature will fall to 31 degrees.

Thursday: High pressure will make for mostly sunny skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm a bit to 43 degrees.
Friday: A cold front will move into the region which will make for partly cloudy skies. The high temperature will warm to 49 degrees ahead of the front. When the cold front moves through, snow showers will start to fall at night.
Saturday: The weekend will start out with cloudy skies and snow showers from a disturbance following the front. Most areas will expect one to two inches of snowfall with a high temperature of only 30 degrees.
Sunday: High pressure will move in quickly behind the departing cold front which will make for partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. The high temperature will warm slightly to 35 degrees.
Monday: High pressure will continue to be in control for mostly sunny skies. The high temperature will warm a bit to 40 degrees.
Tuesday: Skies will be partly cloudy ahead of another approaching cold front. The warmer air ahead of the front will push the mercury up to 45 degrees.
Wednesday: The cold front will move in and bring mostly cloudy skies with rain showers. The high temperature will reach 48 degrees before the rain showers start to fall.
Thursday: Cold air behind the front will move in which will change the rain showers over to snow. The high temperature will drop to 42 degrees.
Friday: Cold air will still be in place with upslope winds which will make for cloudy skies and snow showers. The high temperature will cool to 36 degrees.
One Final Note: Today's high temperature in Charleston is 68 degrees which was set in 2009. This is one of only four days in the entire year in Charleston where the temperature has never reached 70 degrees. There is one such record still in January, and two days with record highs below 70 degrees in December.
